The February issue of PMA Magazine – Connecting the Imaging Communities is now available in an interactive format. The browser-based digital edition preserves the publication’s layout, as well as includes hyperlinks and search features. Readers can share and print individual articles, as well as download a PDF for offline reading. Clicking on an article’s headline brings up a new window where users can post articles to social networking sites, email, print a text version, and translate the text into five languages. Internet users unhappy with product recommendations

eMarketer reports more than half of Internet users were not happy with the product recommendations they received at e-commerce sites in 2009, an increase of 14 percentage points over 2008, according to the ChoiceStream “2009 Personalization Survey.” ChoiceStream attributed the change to heightened consumer expectations as well as a lower level of expertise among e-tailers, many of which are new to automated recommendations. “Shoppers notice recommendations more than they have in the past and, in fact, have come to expect them,” said Lori Trahan, vice president of marketing at ChoiceStream.... Samsung plans to triple smartphone sales this year

The Washington Post reports Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Seoul, South Korea, says it plans to triple smartphone shipments this year to more than 18 million units. Samsung is the world’s second-biggest cellphone, and is aiming to get a foothold in the fast-growing smartphone market. Samsung and rival LG Electronics Inc. together account for more than 30 percent of the overall cellphone market, but hold very small pieces of the smartphone market. “There’ll be a big change in our smartphone strategy this year,” the paper quoted Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung’s mobile... Retailers announce stronger financial results for January

Several retailers saw signs of hope in January, as sales increased for many. Here’s a look: BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc., Natick, Mass., reported that total sales for the month of January 2010 increased by 13.0 percent to $742.6 million from $656.9 million in January 2009. On a comparable club basis, January sales increased by 8.4 percent, including a contribution from sales of gasoline of approximately 5.5 percent. PMA DAta Watch: Digital camera sales this past December a slight improvement over the past couple of years

According to PMA Marketing Research, typically, 30-40 percent of digital camera sales occur in the last quarter of any given year. With a faltering economy, this past November and December were extremely rough for retailers. Once again, the year as a whole was not favorable for digital camera manufacturers and retailers. Something’s new at Henry’s

There’s something new on the horizon for Canadian photo retail chain Henry’s, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, according to a story which will be published in the March edition of PMA Newsline Canada. According to company president Ian Landy, the company is in process of winding down its downtown Toronto outlet center, with a new one scheduled to open in neighboring Mississauga in early March.
