HP Co., Palo Alto, Calif., announced Consolidated Graphics Inc. (CGX) purchased 10 HP Indigo 10000 Digital Presses. CGX will begin installing the presses at locations throughout its 70-company network when the HP Indigo 10000 becomes commercially available in early 2013.

In addition to the 10-press purchase, Nies/Artcraft, a CGX company specializing in targeted direct marketing services, will be a beta user for the HP Indigo 10000, receiving an early production unit later this year. Nies/Artcraft, one of the leading digital printing providers in the CGX network, runs more than a dozen HP Indigo presses in a high-volume direct mail, photo products, packaging and general commercial print production operation that serves many Fortune 500 companies.

CGX primarily will use the presses for direct marketing and other commercial printing work. The HP Indigo 10000 has a size format that makes it suitable for folding carton production, an application several CGX companies also will adopt when they install their new presses in 2013.

Panasonic offers new camcorder, 3D digital camera prototype

Panasonic Consumer Electronics Co., Secucus, N.J., announces the HDC-Z10000, its first integrated twin-lens 2D/3D camcorder that is fully compatible with the AVCHD 3D/Progressive standard, which was also recently announced. The HDC-Z10000 offers a 3D video macro setting with a twin-lens 3D camcorder at approximately 17.8 inches, allowing users to capture 3D video that is typically difficult to do, such as flowers, animals and jewelry.

The HDC-Z10000 features a 1,152,000-dot, 3.5-inch LCD that appears 3D to the naked eye – no 3D eyewear needed.  By using a parallax barrier to control the direction of the light from the LCD, images with slightly different perceptions are viewed by the right and left eyes, thus creating a 3D effect.  The user can check 3D images while shooting, without having to connect a monitor. Naturally, the display can also be switched between 2D and 3D.

The HDC-Z10000 also boasts Panasonic’s unique Double 3MOS System, with two high-sensitivity 3MOS sensors (having an effective pixel count of 6.57 megapixels each) that are independently mounted left and right.

The Panasonic HDC-Z10000 will be available in black and the pricing and availability will be announced approximately 30 days prior to shipping.

Panasonic also announced the development of the new LUMIX 3D prototype, a twin-lens 3D digital camera that will also shoot 2D photos and HD video. With its 3D still and video capabilities, the compact camera will allow users to take 3D photos and 3D HD videos, while further expanding the world of consumer 3D entertainment.

The LUMIX 3D camera employs two recently-developed 4x zoom lenses with thin, folded optics, which allow users to capture crisp and clear photo and video footage even from afar.  It is expected to be available this winter 2011-12.

PMDA seeks photographers for annual Portraits of Love project

The PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA), Woodbury, N.Y., is calling for studio photographers throughout the United States to participate in its third annual Portraits of Love Project, which offers families of deployed military personnel free portraits for the holiday season. Photographers who volunteer their time will be asked to photograph families stateside, and then upload the images to a server where prints will be shipped free of charge to both the families and their loves ones serving overseas.
The Portraits of Love Project offers professional photographers and portrait studios an opportunity to use their talents and resources to show their appreciation for our military personnel serving abroad. The PMDA’s nationwide network of volunteer photographers will be asked to open their studios to military families from Oct. 1, 2011 through Dec. 31, 2011. While some studios may choose to host sessions by appointment throughout this period, others may elect to host open sessions on select days.
Interested photographers can register to participate in the program online at http://www.pmdaportraitsoflove.com/photographers.php between September 1 and October 1, 2011.
Volunteer photographers will receive program promotional materials from the PMDA along with directions on how to upload portraits to the Project’s fulfillment system. Additionally, volunteer photographers will be asked to provide details about their studio space, such as location, size and set-up to allow organizers to plan for anticipated volumes in each market.

InfoTrends forecasts strong growth for photo merchandise

InfoTrends, Weymouth, Mass., released its U.S. Consumer Photo Merchandise Market Forecast: 2010-2015. InfoTrends projects the photo merchandise market will grow substantially over the forecast period, reaching $2.2 billion in revenues by 2015. Photo books will contribute the most to overall revenue and will experience the largest growth numbers. Increasing penetration into the mass market through marketing and promotional efforts will be key to driving photo merchandise growth over the next few years.

Associate Director David Haueter commented, “Attracting more first-time buyers into the photo merchandise market will be essential to success. InfoTrends consumer research data shows that, in 2010, only 32 percent of survey respondents had purchased any type of photo merchandise in the past year. This was an increase over 2009 numbers (25 percent), but there is still nearly 70 percent of the population that have not purchased photo merchandise in the last year.”

For vendors to be successful, they must have attractive and competitive photo merchandise product offerings. They also must have marketing efforts in place that clearly show the benefits of these products to their customers and must be in a state of constantly looking ahead to determine what products their customers will want or what types of new design or product features will appeal to them. Vendors must also be considering how to improve the workflow process that is involved with the creation and ordering of photo merchandise items to make it simpler for their customers, InfoTrends said.

Haueter continued, “There are challenges involved in being successful in this market, but InfoTrends has a very positive outlook on the long-term health and growth of this market, as it gives consumers a creative outlet for doing things with their photos. This makes photo merchandise very appealing to photographers of all ages and skill levels.”
