Double data density: Intel, Micron develop 128-gigabit flash chip

A terabit of data storage in a fingertip-size package: Intel and Micron say their new 128-gigabit NAND flash chip provides twice the storage capacity and performance of their previous 64Gb device, “providing customers with a more cost-effective solid-state storage solution for today’s slim, sleek product designs.”

Smaller than a fingertip, the multilevel-cell chip was created through a 20 nanometer manufacturing process, with a planar structure that allows memory cells to scale much smaller than before, and stacking as many as eight chips on top of each other. It is capable of 333 megatransfers per second,

High-definition video is one example of an application that requires high-capacity storage, the companies say, since attempting to stream this type of data can create a poor user experience.

It was developed through Intel and Micron’s joint-development venture, IM Flash Technologies, and mass production is set for the first half of 2012.

I3A adds Intel, iCRco, to membership

International Imaging Industry Association (I3A), Wakefield, Mass., announced Intel Corp. joined the non-profit organization as a Strategic member. Intel will be an active member of I3A’s Mobile Imaging Interest Group and its Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) Initiative.

I3A also announced health-imaging firm iCRco, a global leader in digital and computed radiology, has joined the non-profit organization as a Regular member.  iCRco will be participating in I3A’s Health Imaging Interest Group to take advantage of I3A’s market share research reports program.

Intel and Toshiba launch social media film project “Inside”

Intel Corp., Santa Clara., Calif., and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Irvine, Calif.,  announced a creative collaboration and campaign to deliver a new social film project titled “Inside.” As part of the film experience, an online casting call has also been issued at

Starring Emmy Rossum (“Shameless,” “Phantom of the Opera”), “Inside” is a blockbuster-class experiment in social entertainment, brought to life by leading minds in Hollywood, technology and social media. The film aims to bring a new genre of interactive, social entertainment and is directed by D.J. Caruso (“Disturbia,” “I Am Number Four,” “Eagle Eye”) and Oscar-winning cinematographer Mauro Fiore (“Avatar,” “Training Day”).

“‘Inside’ is unique because it allows me as the director to direct not just the actors but the audience as well,” Caruso said. “Social film is still in an experimental phase and collaborations like this one will help bring new concepts, opportunities and ideas to the world of entertainment. We had to approach the film differently because there are blanks that need to be filled in by the social media audience, but that is what makes it an exciting new experience for the viewer; the opportunity to participate in the film itself.”

In the film, Rossum plays the role of Christina, a 20-something woman trapped in a room with only a 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 processor-powered Toshiba Satellite P775 series laptop and an untraceable Internet connection. Unable to determine where she is being held or what her fate might be, Christina uses the laptop to mobilize her social network, reaching out to friends, family and anyone else who can help her figure out where she’s being held and how to escape.

Unlike most static productions, “Inside” engages the audience by enlisting them to be a part of the film through social media. Viewers are encouraged to connect with Christina, tweet clues and post advice to her Facebook wall. The film will air in short episodes starting on July 25. During this time, viewers will be invited to activate their social channels and help decode Christina’s dilemma by posting tips, insights, ideas and clues. The editing team, led by Emmy-winning editor Josh Bodnar, will incorporate posts that best fit the storyline into the episodes.

Additionally, one viewer will have a chance to be cast in a role through a YouTube online casting call that  runs through July 20. The winning video submission will be incorporated into the movie and the winner will be included in the credits of the film.

Intel invests in InVisage

InVisage Technologies, which demonstrated its “QuantumFilm” sensor technology at our 2010 6Sight Future of Imaging conference, will use an investment from Intel Capital to bring its products into mass production.

“Image sensors for smart phones and handheld devices are a huge market opportunity and InVisage is well positioned to capture significant market share,” Intel Capital says.  “InVisage is the first company in a while to think differently about image sensors and we are confident that its products will lead the imaging market on a new vector of innovation.”

InVisage is a fabless semiconductor company developing quantum dot imaging technology designed to replace conventional CMOS silicon image sensors. The company was incorporated in 2005 and is based in Menlo Park, California.

Intel Capital is Intel’s global investment organization, and makes equity investments in innovative technology start-ups and companies worldwide.

Intel and Nokia team up for new software platform

Intel Corp. of Santa Clara, Calif., and Nokia Corp., Espoo, Finland, have announced plans to merge their Moblin and Maemo software platforms. According to a press release, this will create a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Called MeeGo, the open software platform is designed to accelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a large number of new Internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences. MeeGo-based devices from Nokia and other manufacturers are expected to be launched later this year.

The MeeGo software platform will be hosted by the Linux Foundation as a fully open source project, encouraging community participation in line with the best practices of the open source development model. Intel and Nokia invite the respective members of and to join the combined community at, as well as encouraging wider participation from the communications, computing and related industries. Developers can begin writing applications for MeeGo in Qt immediately.

Nokia’s Ovi Store will be the channel to market for apps and content for all Nokia devices, including MeeGo and Symbian-based, with Forum Nokia providing developer support across all Nokia device platforms. The Intel AppUpSM Center will be the path to market for Intel-based MeeGo devices from other device manufacturers, with the Intel® Atom(TM) Developer Program providing support for applications targeting devices in a variety of categories.
