When I started riding a mountain bike, I bought a cheap watch and it was a terrible experience. It broke down at the first sign of any impact. I then bought a high-end watch for about $200, and it too broke down after about five months.

Buying Guide For The Best Watch For Mountain Biking
1. Water Resistant
When you are mountain biking, you are always on the move. The watch is not going to be protected as it is not in your pocket and is exposed to the elements. Therefore, it should be water-resistant. This can be an issue if you are mountain biking in the rain.
2. Shock Resistance
When you fall off your bike, a shock-resistant watch will protect your wrist from impact and help prevent further injury or damage to the watch itself.
3. Notifications
When you ride a bicycle, there are many things that can happen and it can get pretty hectic at times. You need to know when someone is coming up behind you, when somebody needs assistance, or when something has happened that requires your attention immediately before it becomes an issue for others on the trail or road.
4. Battery Life And Charging Time
Most watches have very limited battery life and charging time so make sure that the watch has enough battery life for at least one full day of use before charging and for at least two full charges if using solar power (this will determine how long it takes before recharging). Also, make sure that you have a way of charging your watch without having to do so in between rides (I like to carry my charger with me). Some watches even have a USB port for recharging purposes which can come in handy especially if there is no power outlet available nearby or if traveling through remote areas where electricity may not be readily available (such as a mountain biking trip in the Andes).
5. Display Screen
A display screen is an important feature for viewing maps and other information while riding. It is especially important if you are riding in places like the Andes where you may not have cell phone service available or if you are in a remote area where the nearest cell phone tower may be miles away (I was on a mountain bike trip through the Peruvian Andes and did not have cell service available at all while I was there). On most watches, you can change the screen to show either text or graphics so that it is easy to see what’s going on while riding.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is that you need to make sure that your watch has the right features and functions that are important to you. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a watch, but you do need to make sure that it has the features and functions that you want or will use on a daily basis. If you have any questions about specific features or functions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below.
