What Is HelloFresh And What Do They Offer

HelloFresh is a meal kit delivery service that sends all the ingredients and recipes to customers so they can make restaurant-quality meals at home.

The company was founded in 2011 by Dominik Richter, Thomas Griesel, and Volker Backs, who met while working together at a German software company. They decided to focus on the burgeoning trend of gourmet food being delivered fresh to supermarket shelves overnight instead of selling the actual grocery items themselves. They experimented with this concept for about two years before launching HelloFresh in 2013.

With every customer receiving only the freshest ingredients (HelloFresh delivers over 1 million pounds of produce per month), cooking healthy and delicious meals has never been easier!

The service works by offering customers 3 different meal plan sizes (Snack, Classic, and Family), each containing around 15 recipes. Some popular options include Chicken Parmesan with Rigatoni, Black Pepper Beef Stir-Fry, Turkey Meatballs with Tomato Ragu, and Prosciutto Wrapped Cod.   The newest addition to HelloFresh is their Vegetarian option – similar to the classic meal plans but with plant-based recipes exclusively!

Each week HelloFresh will send you three recipe boxes (one for each plan type). You can skip weeks or cancel at any time. If you like a recipe you can also go into your account and reorder it for future meals. HelloFresh shared that their most popular dish is Turkish Eggs with Avocado, Feta, Tomato Salsa, and Pita. HelloFresh is available in the US and Canada and offers free shipping to most cities. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee so you don’t have to worry about trying it out risk-free!

What Are The Benefits Of Using HelloFresh

As a busy college student, you don’t have time to cook every night – and the drive-through line seems like an all too convenient option. But if you want to make healthy choices for your body and save some cash at the same time, meal planning with HelloFresh is a great option. Here are five benefits of using this service:

1. It saves money

HelloFresh provides fresh ingredients for each menu, so you’re only paying for those ingredients instead of wasted unused food that comes from grocery shopping. If you’ve ever forgotten something at the store then driven home anyway, only to turn back around because now that item is no longer on sale, then you know how wasteful grocery shopping can be.

2. It saves time

HelloFresh does all of the prep work for you, so there’s no need to spend hours chopping vegetables and slicing meat. Just unpack the ingredients and get cooking!

3. It helps you eat healthier

Exposure is the best way to teach yourself about nutrition, which is why HelloFresh focuses on seasonal produce. Every week they will give you a menu with three recipes that go together, ensuring that with each meal, you are enjoying nutritious food with carefully crafted flavors.

4. Cooking healthy, tasty meals becomes easier over time

With every new recipe HelloFresh provides its customers, it becomes easier to cook anything your taste buds desire – even if it isn’t part of your weekly menu. You’ll begin to learn cooking techniques and what flavors work well together, so the next time you want to cook something special, it will be easy as pie.

5. It tastes delicious!

HelloFresh sources its ingredients from local farms and sustainable seafood suppliers, ensuring that everything is fresh. We’ve all had those meals where we can taste that something isn’t quite right – but with HelloFresh each meal will be just as scrumptious as the one before it. Better yet? They even provide wine pairings with your meals!

How To Sign Up For The HelloFresh Program

  • First, visit the HelloFresh website here.
  • If you are not logged in, do so right now. It is free to register for Hello Fresh.
  • Next, click on the tab that says “Your account.”
  • Then select “Refer a friend.” You might see an ad for Hello Fresh at this point. Just close it out and come back to the same referral link after you’ve finished signing up! See the below example:
  • Enter all of your information. If you have an email list through Blogger or another blog provider, check that box. You will still be entered even without one, though- just make sure to complete Step 7!)
  • At this point, you should receive a confirmation email from Hello Fresh. Congrats! You have successfully signed up for HelloFresh!
  • Next, you must wait for a unique link in order to invite your friends and family to sign up through your referral link. You will receive this by email. If you do not see it straight away, be patient and check your spam/junk folders just in case! If you still cannot find the confirmation email from Hello Fresh after a few minutes, check your promotions tab on Gmail. Sometimes these emails go directly into that folder instead of your inbox.
  • In order to get more motivation from yourself, ask at least 3 people in real life if they would like to subscribe with your referral link so that when the box pops up asking how many people you have invited, you will have a higher number to strive for!
  • Remember that your friends and family usually trust you when it comes to food recommendations. Try not to spam people! If they really don’t like the idea of Hello Fresh or grocery shopping in general, do not push them to sign up. You can always ask if they know anyone else who might be interested though.

How Much Does HelloFresh Cost?

I set out to test one of the world’s most popular meal-delivery services, HelloFresh, and see if their recipes are any good.

My goal was (and is) to eat healthier by cooking more meals at home, with fresh ingredients, but my biggest concern with meal-prep services like Blue Apron or HelloFresh doesn’t cost. It’s taste.

I’m not willing to sacrifice flavor for convenience, which I believe limits most food service options. (Yes, I know there are many inexpensive restaurants—but you can’t just order in any type of cuisine!)

But what about these convenient kits that promise gourmet-quality recipes? Surely they’re better than fast food or microwave dinners?

HelloFresh claims its “proprietary algorithm” will send you a box of “farm-fresh ingredients” each week, with recipes designed to take 40 minutes or less.

HelloFresh is the most popular meal delivery service in Germany and its native home of Austria, along with countries including France, Greece, Switzerland, and the UK. In the US alone, there are at least a dozen similar services available nationwide (Blue Apron, Plated, Dinnerly), all competing for your grocery dollars. All these companies follow Blue Apron’s business model: you pay around $10/meal, and they ship your groceries with instructions on how to prepare them.

HelloFresh claims that 70% of its customers come from referrals —a testament to their—and I’ve been hearing about HelloFresh since at least 2014.

But remember: just because something “is popular” doesn’t mean it works well. I’m willing to bet many of those referrals are from people who used the service once and liked it, but how do the recipes really compare to eating in?

I set out to find out. But first, there was one major obstacle: HelloFresh doesn’t deliver its meals within my zip-code! And they’re super apprehensive about meeting me for a taste test—apparently, they don’t want a journalist giving them a bad review. So instead, I called a friend who agreed to let me try his box then buy him dinner as thanks.

Let’s start with that business model, though. The price you pay for HelloFresh depends on your desired box size. I chose the three-person option at $129, but they also offer single and six-person boxes.

HelloFresh promises 2 recipes per week, and each box contains far more ingredients than needed to make those two meals (meaning you can probably get a third recipe or two “for free”).

And here’s where it gets interesting: while Blue Apron gives you the exact number of items you need plus some extra, HelloFresh goes overboard —you’re expected to have way more ingredients than needed on hand so you can mix and match if you like.
